A beautiful deep purple columbine I’ve been growing in my garden for 10-12 years now. It seeds easily and comes back year after year. Bees and butterflies love columbine, deer and rabbits do not, which makes it a wonderful addition to the woodland garden and wilder edges of the garden. Once established it will bloom year after year.

Columbine needs chill time or stratification to germinate. The easiest way is to wintersow them. Sow seeds in flat and barely cover with seed starting mix. Seeds need 3-4 weeks at 40 degrees to germinate. Thin seedlings and harden off before transplanting in the garden.
Direct seed: Sow seeds on top of soil in February and barely cover with soil mix. Thin as needed.
Well-drained soil of moderate fertility.
Perennial, zones 3-9
